EDMX Interviewed By Planet Turbo

1) If you had to explain to your high school principal what you do for a living, what would you say?

I make pop records.

I mean why try and explain anything more nuanced than that? It would be painful.

2) Have your parents ever seen you DJ?

Um…I think my dad has.

3) What do you think is a respectable age to retire from DJing?

I take that as a personal attack.

4) What songs did you love as a child? What songs did you love as a teenager? Do you still like any of these? Did they ever make it into your sets?

Herbie Hancock – Rock It, Kraftwerk – Tour De France…
Then as a teenager, Earth Wind & Fire, Parliament, Eric B & Rakim. Still love it all.

5) Do you feel that there’s a sort of implicit contract between you and the audience as a performer? Would it be a violation of that trust to eat a large sandwich on stage?

Only to do my best to play a good show. I don’t see why that couldn’t involve a sandwich especially if it was large enough to get a laugh.

6) If you could take back anything you’ve ever done onstage, what would it be?

Trying to breakdance in Munich in the 90s. Wearing a rising sun headband in Osaka, Japan. Miming synth drums with Tiga on Top of the Pops. Actually, I would do it all again in a second.

7) Describe the least appealing backstage offer you’ve ever received after a show.

Is it OK to sleep at my house instead of a hotel? When the house is basically a huge ashtray.

Even more: can you sleep here in this backroom on this thin piece of foam stinking of cigarettes, either in the freezing cold or next to this generator giving off petrol fumes?

8) Eye contact with the audience. How much is too much? How much is never enough?

I dunno. I like to pick one or two people from the crowd and focus on making them dance. If that works, it usually gets most of the other people going too.

9) You have been sentenced to die. The warden agrees to let you use the prison for an anything-goes night of dancing. Who do you pick to DJ?

Someone with some good old soul and funk and R&B records.

10) What music are you currently excited about?

Minnie Riperton, James Brown, Chick Corea and Flora Purim.

11) Why is Turbo so important to you?

You are presuming.

12) What was your first-ever Turbo record?

“Seedy Films.”

13) What is your favorite Turbo record?

“Bass Drop.”

14) Vinyl, CD, laptop. Which one and why?

Vinyl cos I’m used to it and it’s full of memories of my life.
